Overcoming Acne – The Three Aspects of Acne Care
When you have acne, you want the best treatment for this distressing and embarrassing skin issue. However, with the hundreds of products and the endless supply of advice available, figuring out how to deal with your blemishes can be extremely confusing. This article describes the three aspects of acne care that you should address for the best results in overcoming acne.
Through Nutrition
While there is a popular conception that acne is caused by eating greasy or processed junk foods, it is not precisely true that a poor diet leads to blemishes.
However, the foods you eat can have an indirect impact on your blemishes for the following reasons:
Acne is caused in part by fluctuations in your hormone levels. Getting the proper nutrients on a regular basis can help to keep your hormones balanced and prevent acne breakouts.
Inflammation is a major factor in the occurrence of acne. Keeping your immune system functioning properly to combat inflammation requires eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, heart-healthy fats and whole grains.
Through Appropriate Skin Care
When you have an acne breakout, it can be tempting to wash your face repeatedly, scrub at your pimples, and treat your skin with strong medications. However, over-washing and using harsh chemicals on your skin can cause irritation which may actually make your acne problem worse.
Instead, look for non-comedogenic, all-natural skin care products designed for treating acne-prone skin. Cleanse your skin twice per day with a clean washcloth; if you use drying creams such as benzoyl peroxide, be sure to moisturize to prevent over-drying and peeling.
If you wear makeup, avoid oil-based products and only use cosmetics which are labeled as noncomedogenic or non-acnegenic.
Through Prescription Medications
If you have stubborn or severe acne that does not respond to treatment with over-the-counter products or home remedies, do not delay talking to your doctor or dermatologist about using a prescription acne medication. There are a number of prescription drugs which are highly effective for treating acne, and the sooner you begin treatment, the better your chances of overcoming acne without scarring.
